My Artistic Journey

I have always loved to paint. My earliest memory is being around 9 years old in school, and being so glad every time our weekly art lesson came round. My class teacher was close to retirement and very strict! It was from him that I learnt to play rounders, write cursively and to paint. My love grew through senior school and when it came to choosing GCSE options I knew art was one of them. I continued with A Level art, followed by a creative degree in Community Arts.

I went into a teaching role for many years before the birth of my two children and while I remained creative, I didn't have the same time to dedicate to painting. After having my children, I went through a lengthy time of ill health. It was during this time that I picked up my sketcbook more often, art becoming fundamental to my recovery.

I then enrolled on an art course with a local, professional artist. This time helped develop my skills, grow my confidence and gave me time to explore and create. I think back on this time as a pivotal moment in me embracing my creativity.

During this time I had a career change and trained to be a Psychotherapist. It is a long, intense route to qualifying and art was both a personal outlet when I needed space, and also a part of my developing professional identity.

I delivered a workshop at a national conference around the use of creativity within psychotherapy. I am grateful that these two aspects of my life can combine. I now work as an adult and adolescent Psychotherapist during the week an on weekends can often be found trading at local makers markets.

My life has been woven with art and it brings me pleasure to share my art with others. When I share my work I often ask; "What do you see?" and "What do you feel?". The meaning of my paintings doesn't just belong to me, it is meant to evoke your subjective experience.
